Blame the “Media”

For my inaugural post I thought I would choose a subject close to my heart. Or shall we say close to my life. I work in media, to be more precise I sell ad space for an advertising and marketing company. Media was continually a subject that came up during my youth in church settings and generally it was considered negative.

Here is the thing, for some reason Christians love to blame the “media” for the common issues that arise in most youth. I have heard countless speakers over the years bring up “media” and point to its evils. It’s a subject headlined at conferences and youth rallies. It is positioned as the greatest roadblock in our relationship with God. Most often we are asked to turn away from the media and this will fix our problems.

Said “media” often includes: anorexic models in ads, sexual imagery in TV/movies, acceptance of disrespect, violent music, and the list goes on. Which is entirely true. These all exist in nearly every movie, TV show and popular music.

To make it worse like no generation before media has become fully integrated into the grain of our culture. Its an appendage! Try taking an iphone from an Apple addict (I use a BB but that’s a whole other topic) and see what happens… Panic attacks, heart failure trust me its not pretty!

This is why “media” is the perfect scapegoat for our problems. It’s constantly broadcasting its messages of EVIL, therefore it is too blame. I am going to let you in on a secret when it comes to Advertising Media, the intent of Advertising is not to promote evil. It is to sell products and services! Sure this can be accomplished by sexual imagery, its a proven method and it works. Is this reason enough to blame our problems? No, it exists because it works in our society. Its a result of a corrupted society that existed way before media as we know it. The Bible doesn’t show us a media-less society that functioned in complete euphoria. It more often shows us societies that were completely corrupted, godless and in need a Revolution. Does that sound familiar?

When we try to avoid the “media” we are really just putting the true issues to sleep. We are pushing them to the back of our mind which might feel safe but its not a solution. We need to see what is beneath the surface of the “problem” rather than the undesirable results or actions. What is often missing is a true identity in God.

Without an understanding of your true identity in God  you will be easily persuaded and vulnerable to finding your identity in what you do or how You see yourself. There is a lot of freedom that comes with seeing ourself how God sees us. We recognize that “media” is no more then a reflection of a fallen society and is an image that does not emulates lasting character. So instead of avoidance choose to find your true identity.

There really is nothing that can change the way God sees us and that includes the evil “media” empire.
