I am correct in believing that most Christians believe that voting Conservative would result in the best chance of abolishing Abortion & Gay Marriage laws? These are the flagship issues most Christians have with our Country. They both are always hot political topics with Christians.

Stephen Harper has just announced that abolishing or changing these laws is currently not in his election platform and he will not make any changes at this point. There has been some belief that if Harper ever gained a majority he could potentially make some changes to these laws. However he has now spoken directly to these beliefs and said he will not abolish these laws. I am not surprised.

To be completely honest I do not believe Abortion laws will be abolished in Canada. Abortion was decriminalized in 1969  with a Doctor’s signature and since 1988 abortion has had almost no restrictions. For the last 20 some years no new abortion laws have been passed in Canada. I do not believe that the change to abortion will come through Politics or at least not yet. This is not popular platform material when over 50% of the country considers themselves pro-choice. This is why I find it unlikely that  a Party leader would suggest that he wants to change 20+ year old laws.

Both the Liberals & Conservatives have MP’s that are against abortion, so a Conservative vote on this basis is no sure win.

I also find it blatantly ignorant that some Christians believe you must vote for one party. If you really want to try and change this law via the political route then make sure you check which MP’s actually are against abortion and vote for the one that shares your beliefs. You should vote for the Party which best represents your beliefs on how the Country should run.

Is there an answer then?

Yes, we need a cultural shift towards the value of life. We need more than 50% of Canadians to want this change. When only 27% of Canadians consider themselves pro-life this is ground for a Cultural Revolution. I am not against political rallies and I commend the people who have dedicated their lives to change. In order to see a change on a Political level we need a Cultural shift that will make this issue a popular political platform.

Don’t be short sited and believe a Conservative government will change these issues. Hearts need to change before laws will.
